Kolkata, March 4 Garbage collectors of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) beat up on-duty traffic sergeant Uttam Burman following an altercation near the Victoria Memorial on Tuesday. The police have registered a case against the miscreants.

Burman (35), who suffered head injuries, has been admitted to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute and is stated to be out of danger.

According to the police, the brawl broke out around 9 am when Burman, a south traffic signal operator, objected to the garbage collection truck colliding with a “no-parking” portable road divider along the Cathedral Road. The truck was coming from the south gate of the Victoria Memorial.

During the argument that ensued, garbage collectors beat up Burman with sticks.

When other policemen in the vicinity attempted to intervene, the garbage collectors tried to escape with the truck.

In the process, a motorcycle and a private car were damaged. The workers then abandoned the truck and fled, said the police.
