South Calcutta Law College has a “tradition” when it comes to students’ body elections: SFI ensures no one other than their candidates can file nominations.
The other unions in the poll fray in the college are RSP’s Progressive Students Union (PSU) and Forward Bloc’s Students Bloc. On Tuesday, Kasturi and eight of her friends decided to challenge SFI’s diktat, and queued up at the college office for nomination papers. SFI leaders allegedly barged in with a number of “outsiders” and broke up the queue violently, knocking down Kasturi. She was admitted to Sambhunath Pandit Hospital and was released after being given first aid. She complained to the college principal and later, lodged a complaint with the Gariahat police station. Kasturi, a second year student of law and a PSU leader, said: “As a law student, I cannot support what is happening.”
OC Dulal Chakraborty, however, said: “There was no clash and it is not a big issue. We have already investigated the matter.”
