The students have been protesting against the Calcutta University’s inaction against Bengali Department teacher Indubhusan Mondal, who allegedly molested an MSc student last year.
The students reached college early this morning and locked the main entrance, leaving 19 teachers as well as the non-teaching staff with no option but to remain outside till late evening.
Classes of the home science department were not held for a fourth consecutive day.
A similar protest took place on Monday, when 200 students of the college boycotted classes and blocked the gates for six hours. Raising slogans, they demanded exemplary punishment against the teacher.
"The students do not want Mondal to attend the college any more," said Swagata Palit, a student.
A one-man inquiry committee had been set up by the Dean of Arts, Sanjukta Dasgupta, and it was to submit its report this Monday.
"We don't know what the inquiry has come out with, but we are very sure that the teacher had molested the girl," another student said.
The students said that they have also conducted a signature campaign after the news appeared in the media in January this year.
The teachers, it seems, are on the students’ side. Some expressed dissatisfaction with the inquiry panel results. Head of the home science department Minoti Sen, said that the CU has not contacted them. "We want to know the details of the one-man inquiry,” she said.
“We are not satisfied with the way the situation has been dealt with and we have told the university as much,” she added. Expressing doubts about the manner in which the inquiry was conducted, she said 18 teachers had put their objections on paper. Only two were, however, contacted by the panel.
