While the management sought time to consider the union’s demands, the union, too, expressed hope that an amicable solution will emerge to the recent impasse.
On March 22, the HPL employees’ union backed by CITU gave a notice to the management announcing a strike from April 8, demanding the immediate regularisation of the casual employees. It withdrew the strike and agreed to sit for talks after state commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen intervened.
Union vice-president Ashok Patanaik said: “We have discussed the matter with two representatives of HPL management in a meeting today. They have sought time to consider our demands and see what can be done for the casual employees. They have told that they will get back to us in writing within a couple of days. We are always open to dialogue regarding our demands.”
The meeting took place today at HPL premises in Haldia. The management had called for talks with the union, which responded favorably.
