Kolkata, April 11 The Calcutta Customs today filed a petition in the High Court, challenging the Barasat Court order that the passport of Jose Barrato, popular footballer of Mohun Bagan Club, be handed over to him.

In the petition, Calcutta Customs contended that the passport could not be handed over in a case of violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

The matter is likely to come up for hearing on Tuesday.

Barreto was arrested on March 20 by the Customs authorities at the NSC Bose International Airport for violation of certain provisions under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

He was released on bail by the order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barasat.

On April 7, the Barasat court directed the Customs authorities to hand over the passport seized, with a rider that he should return to India by May 25, 2008.

After the petition was filed today in the High Court, officials of Mohun Bagan club felt it would be difficult for Barreto to visit Brazil soon.
