Kolkata, April 12 Bijon Halder (46) was arrested from Posta last night with illegal gold and jewellery worth Rs 1 crore.

Halder, who owns a courier company, had managed to elude officials at NSC Bose airport by hiding the jewellery in his luggage, police said.

Sleuths of the Motor Theft Squad of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) apprehended Halder from Yogendra Kabiraj Road near Posta after they received a tip off. He was handed over to the city police around 9 pm on Friday.

According to the police, Haldar had brought the jewellery from Delhi via air despite strong surveillance at the Airport.

Three packets containing gold bars, a gold necklace and diamond rings have been recovered from his possession.

A CID officer said “Halder had planned to smuggle these ornaments to Bangladesh through his agents. He has a house in Nadia where his clients drop in to collect the jewellery which is then smuggled through the porous border.”
