The deceased has been identified as Ganga Shankar (44), a resident of Subhasgram in South 24-Parganas.
The body was discovered around 10 am from a staircase near the oxygen cylinder storage room at Centenary building.
“The relatives of a patient saw the man lying on the staircase in the morning. We are not sure how he died and the body has been sent for postmortem,” said Parthosarathi Ghosh, the Deputy Commissioner of police (eastern suburban division).
According to the police, Shankar was working at Nilratan Sarkar hospital for a long time.
Sources in the hospital said that despite years of service, he was not allotted a room in the staff quarters of the hospital.
