kolkata, April 27 A 25-year-old man died when he struck a lamppost while traveling in an overcrowded train on Sunday. The incident took place near Kamrabad School in South 24 Parganas. The deceased has been identified as Basudeb Haldar.

According to the police, before Basudeb, 20 more people have died in the same manner, as the lamppost is located very close to the railway track. While traveling in the train, Haldar was hanging on the bogies’ gate.

Around 1.30 pm when the speeding train approached Kambrabad, he saw the lamppost and requested his co-passengers to drag him inside.

Unfortunately, by the time others could react, Haldar collided with the lamppost and fell down from the train. He was rushed to the Nilratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital.

Earlier, on February 8, Rajen Hazra, a resident of Sonarpur, was killed after he struck the same lamppost.

Irked by the increasing number of such accidents, passengers damaged railway property and put up a road blockade.

Divisional Railway Manager (Sealdah) SK Mondal said, “The distance between the railway track and the lamppost is as per norms. But keeping in mind the series of accidents we are planning to remove the post.”
