Kanpur, April 28 After the approval of Council of IITs, final touches are being given to a new fee structure at IIT, Kanpur. While raising the fees, IIT-K will ensure that existing students do not have to pay the increased fee. A tuition waiver will be provided to students from financially weak background.

At present a BTech student has to pay Rs 13,500 as semester fee, which is being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. The total will work out to Rs 2 lakh, in place of the current Rs 1.08 lakh, an increase of almost 100 per cent.

The MTech two-year course fee is being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. An MTech student has to appear for four semesters over two years. Similarly, the fee for MBA, and Master of Design too has been raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. For the MSc and PhD programmes too, plans are afoot to double the fee.

The Dean of Student's Affairs, Prawal Sinha, told The Indian Express, "Apart from MSc, a uniformity has been brought in the fee structure of all other courses."

He said a tuition fee waiver will be given to students getting fellowship from the institution.

Around 25 per cent students each of undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be getting financial relief.

Students whose parents have a salary less than Rs 2 lakh per annum are included in the tuition fee waiver.

"Around 80 per cent of their fees would be waived off," remarked Sinha.

Commenting on the issue, Assistant Registrar, KV Satya Murty, said the proposal has been approved by Council of IITs.

"It is being ensured that the system is stabilised and there is not much burden on students facing a financial crisis."

Murty said after the tuition fee waiver, a student will have to barely pay Rs 5,000 per semester.
