Kolkata, May 2 Satyajit Ray’s 87th birthday witnessed low-key celebrations on Friday. Apart from the inauguration of photographer Ashit Poddar’s exhibition of stills of the iconic filmmaker, Kolkata did not play host to any other significant event commemorating Ray’s birthday.

The exhibition dominated mostly by black and white stills comes as the photographer’s tribute to Ray. The state government’s cultural showpiece Nandan, too, lacked in imagination and effort when it came to celebrating the filmmaker’s birth anniversary. A call made to Nandan was attended by a brittle official who informed that two of Ray’s films will be screened to mark his birth anniversary.

The Satyajit Ray Film Institute also seems to have observed a low-key anniversary. The institute organised the screening of a Ray film and a panel discussion on his works.
