Kolkata, May 2 With temperature soaring to 42 degrees Celsius, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) seems to have forgotten about the 33,000 children studying in its 242 primary schools.

While all other schools will go on a vacation from the second week of May, the children of all KMC-run primary schools are still clueless about the date of commencement of their summer break.

Around 100 teachers from different KMCP schools made a beeline in front of the education department of the municipal headquarters to know the date of commencement of summer vacation but to no avail. “It is the duty of the civic body to see that the schoolchildren get a respite from this sweltering summer heat,” said Uma Mitra, headmistress of a KMCP school at Nilmoni

Mitra Street.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the Primary Board of Education have already announced the date of summer vacation’s onset — May 9 and May 10 respectively — in all the state government schools. The KMC’s lackadaisical attitude in deciding the date for summer vacation has also enraged the Left Front-backed teachers’ organisation. General secretary of Kolkata Pouro Sikshak Karmi Sangha, Sushil Bhattacharya, said: “We have demanded an explanation from the joint municipal commissioner and Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya about this.”

The list of holidays for the KMCP schools is prepared jointly by the joint municipal commissioner and officers of the Education Department in KMC. But this year none of the schools have received any holiday list till date.
