Assailing “obescenity and half-naked dances”, Rajasthan Brahmin Mahasabha said it would “not allow such dances at any cost” at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, where Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royal will pla a Twenty20 match on May 9.
“Rajasthan is a state of royals; of the sacrifices of Panna Dhay and Rani Padmini. It will not tolerate such an immoral act in public,” Mahasabha women’s wing president Sharda Sharma told a news conference here.
The maid Panna Dhay is believed to have sacrificed her infant son to save Prince Uday Singh from being slain by his uncle Banbir who wanted to usurp the throne. Rani Padmini preferred death to abduction and dishonour.
Sharma said the Bombay High Court had directed the cheergirls to wear more proper attire “but in Rajasthan they are being promoted, which is absolutely vulgar and inciting”.
She said Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje should ask Rajasthan Cricket Association president Lalit Modi to put a stop to “such filmy dances”.
The Mahasabha warned that its activists would storm the stadium on May 9 and chase the cheerladers away if the government did not intervene.
The cheerleaders have found themselves the midst of a row over their attire and “gyrations” and been asked to cover up during performances in the metros of Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.
