British law firms may take their first step into India soon. To explore avenues in the Indian legal services sector, UK Minister for Justice Bridget Prentice is in India from May 5 to 8.

Addressing a press meet in Kolkata today, Prentice said: “The UK has more than 200 foreign law firms, of which about 10 are Indian. We are looking at the exchange of professionals and expertise between the two countries.”

The minister said British expertise could help Indian companies expand through various modes like mergers and acquisitions, increased exports, joint ventures and raising capital overseas. Prentice said the companies of UK can provide highly specialised legal services and expertise that international finance clients increasingly demand.
