935 drivers fined in a day

Pune, May 16 Pune rural police collected a fine of Rs 5.01 lakh from 935 erring drivers in the district on the day one of accident control scheme. The scheme was launched on Thursday as a move to control the road mishaps, especially on the highways.

A press release issued by the rural police said that a staff of 300 cops including 50 senior officers

conducted a nakabandi operation at 16 different points in the district.

Police teams checked vehicles and filed offences against those found to be violating the traffic rules.

About 237 persons were fined for triple seat driving on a two wheeler, 455 drivers were fined for lane cutting on the highways, 31 heavy vehicles were fined for over loading and 342 drivers were fined for driving vehicles without tail lights and indicators.

The police also booked 278 cases of illegal public transport and three cases of drunken driving.

District Superintendent of Police Vishwas Nangare Patil said that the accident control scheme would continue for 15 days on experimental basis.
