The local CPM leadership claimed the supporters of CPI-ML organised the attack on them after winning the Goswamipara gram panchayat seat.
The general secretary of CPI-ML, Kartik Pal, however alleged that the CPM cadres attacked the families that belong to their camp.
He also claimed that at least 11 CPI-ML supporters were injured in the incident. Jyotsna Ghosh, a supporter of the party, was severely beaten up and admitted to Chinsura hospital. Four others are also undergoing treatment there.
“The CPM cadres attacked our activists as it had lost the gram panchayat seat for the first time. They ransacked the houses in the villages. But the police did not take any step following the incident,” said Pal.
Sunil Sarkar, Hooghly district committee member of CPM, however, claimed that four of their supporters were admitted in the hospital with severe injuries.
On his part, Raj Kanojia, Inspector General, (Law and Order), said sporadic violence took place in different areas after the declaration of panchayat poll results. But the police were active in maintaining law and order.
The overall situation in the districts was peaceful today except for a few stray incidents, he added.
