Despite the declaration of the Higher Secondary Examination results on May 20, the Higher Education Council had decided that the admission process would begin only after the Joint Entrance Examination, which was scheduled for May 24, thereby delaying the admission process.
The Indian Express visited colleges and universities across the town to get a bird’s eye view of the admission process and the related criteria.
University of Calcutta
The university announced on May 22 that admission forms will be issued from June 2 to June 23, after which admission process will begin. According to the university, classes should start by 15 July. The university makes it necessary for a student to pass in English to enroll in the 3-year Honours and general courses. Colleges will work out aggregate marks based on best four subjects, excluding Environmental Science.
Last date of admission is August 23 and last date of change of stream is September 26.
While St Xavier’s College will only accept forms online, Presidency College has decided to continue with entrance tests for admission to all the departments.
Lady Brabourne College will admit more students in Science streams.
Jadavpur University
Admission forms will be distributed from May 28- June 7.
Science Faculty: Forms for BSc Hons in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will be given to students who have scored at least 65 per cent marks. For students of SC, ST and OBC categories, the corresponding requirement is of 45 per cent marks.
Arts Faculty: Marks of best of five subjects will be considered for CBSE and HS students, while best of four for ISC students. Forms will be given to students who have secured at least 60 per cent aggregate marks.
There will be no examination for Economics and Sanskrit.
Students in English department will be admitted on the basis of marks obtained in admission tests. In subjects like History, Political Science, Philosophy and Bengali, equal weightage will be given to marks in Class XII and marks obtained in the admission tests.
Rabindra Bharati University
The university will start admission process from June 2 and will consider marks of two languages in deciding best of five for Higher Secondary and ISC.
For admission to the Fine Arts discipline, the students will have to appear for an admission test.
West Bengal
State University
The new university with 57 colleges will start the academic process from this session. The university will distribute forms from June 2. The university will follow the curriculum of the Calcutta University for the first year. All the affiliated colleges will distribute forms for the courses they run.
