The JEE Board released the merit list of nearly 45,000 students for engineering and 1,800 students for medical and dental colleges. On May 24, a total of 67,655 students had appeared for the JEE for nearly 17,000 seats in engineering and 1,100 seats in medical colleges of the state.
While students from the city and its suburbs made it to the merit list of engineering entrance exams, students from the minority community and from other districts topped charts in the medical examination. Three students from minority community, including the topper Kamirul Islam of Burdwan CMS High School, 7th rank holder Md Asif Ali from Naimouza High School in Malda, and Aminul Islam of Behrampore Jagannath School featured in the list of top ten rank holders. Shovan Dutta of Howrah Zilla School, Deepan Basu of Hare School and Joydeep Banerjee of WWA Cossipore English School bagged the first three slots in the engineering entrance examination.
Of the successful candidates, nearly 17,080 female candidates in engineering and 615 female candidates in medical examination have made it to the merit list.
No female student, however, could make it to the top 10 either in the engineering or in the medical examination.
“This year the JEE Board will not send any rank card to the successful candidates, these will be available on the websites www.cst-et.org , www.wbjeeb.in, www.wbresults.co.in from June 16,” said Siddhartha Dutta, chairman of the JEEB.
Counselling for engineering seats will begin at the Science City Auditorium from June 26 and will be over by July 14.
Counselling for medical seats will begin from the second week of July.
Students faced a tough time in checking the results of JEE online.
The websites were scheduled to upload the results by noon, but these could be checked only after 3 pm.
With question papers carrying many multiple-choice questions, students from other boards also made it to the merit list.
Joydeep Bannerjee of WWA Cossipore English School ranked 3rd in engineering examination.
He had passed the Class XII examination this year from ISC board, whereas Devasish Mukherjee, a student of Bhavan’s Gangabux School who secured 3rd position in the medical examination was one the state toppers in CBSE Class XII exams this year.

Kamirul Islam, a student of Burdwan CMS High School, passed the Higher Secondary examination last year with 85 per cent marks. He took an extra year to prepare for the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). “This year’s question paper was very scoring. The twenty marks subjective questions were easy and highly scoring,” he said.
Subhrashis Guha Niyogi of BE College Model School, Howrah was ranked second in WBJEE (medical).He has also been selected to represent the country in the 19th International Biology Olympiad 2008 scheduled to be held in Mumbai in the second week of July.
Devasish Mukherjee, stood third in the WBJEE (medical). The student from Bhavan’s Gangabux School got the taste of success and attention a few weeks back as the city topper in CBSE Class XII examinations. Securing the fourth rank in the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) he wishes to study at the Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi.
Deepan Basu from Hare School secured the second rank in the WBJEE (engineering). However, he intends to study statistics at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), if he makes it to the merit list.
Joydeep Banerjee a student of WWA Cossipore English School, stood third in the WBJEE (engineering) feels that there was no problem clearing the entrance being a student of the ISC board.
