Kolkata, June 12 Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Thursday slammed the engineers of the Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP) for the slow progress in carrying out dredging of canals in Behala. Accompanied by a team of municipal engineers from the planning and development department and the drainage department, the mayor visited the Chariyal, Monikhali and Tolly Nullah canal.

“The KEIP engineers are working slowly. Monsoon has already arrived, but the KEIP has not been able to wrap up the work. The canal beds that have not been dredged may flood Behala,” said Bhattacharya.

The mayor has also written a letter to PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami to ensure proper functioning of the drainage systems before the monsoon. The PWD department looks after the drainage system in Cathedral Road, Akashbani Bhavan area, Bodyguard Lines in New Alipore and SSKM hospital.
