Apropos of repeated complaints about the adoption of unfair means during semester examinations, the university has asked Mallabhum Institute of Technology, Bankura and JIS College of Engineering, Kalyani to conduct examinations at centres determined by the university. The students of the second, fourth and sixth semesters of the engineering college are appearing in the examination across the state that will continue till June 21.
“The students of the Mallabhum Institute of Technology are appearing in the examination at a nearby general degree college, while the students of JIS College of Engineering will write their papers at the Government Engineering College, Kalyani” said Rafiqul Islam, the registrar of WBUT.
The university has already suspended five students from JIS College of Engineering and one student from Mallabhum Institute of Technology. It is yet to decide on the examination of all the private and government colleges under WBUT from the next academic session. It is still considering the matter.
During the last semester examination, the students at JIS College of Engineering assaulted the examination observers, leading the university to intervene. The examination at the college was suspended for a few weeks.
The terminal examinations of all general degree colleges, all the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary level schools in the state are held at away centres. The university is contemplating to hold even semester examinations at away centers following complaints about the use of unfair means at the home centres over the years. The university has failed to arrive at a consensus on the issue with its affiliated colleges.
A key hindrance in having away centers is the remote locations of some colleges. It is difficult for the university to come up with an alternative location in the vicinity where the examination can be held.
