Kolkata, June 14 At least seven buses were torched by angry residents of Chanditala in Hooghly district on Saturday after a speeding minibus knocked down a motorcyclist and his pillion, killing them on the spot.

Locals blocked the road and demanded compensation. They even prevented the police from taking away the bodies. The police had to resort to a lathicharge after the crowd went on a rampage and ransacked buses in the area.

The mini bus was travelling from Ramanathpur to Uttarpara when it collided with a bike near Bhagatipur minibus stand, the police said.

They added that the two youths — Sheikh Kutubuddin and Sheikh Nazrul — were locals. While Kutubuddin lived in Bhagatipur, Nazrul lived in Nabapur.

The two bodies were later sent to Walsh Hospital in Sreerampur for postmortem.

The police have made no arrests in this connection, so far.
