Kolkata, June 29 A concern for environmental issues is driving universities to focus on environmental education. The Calcutta University (CU) is introducing the subject at undergraduate level from the next academic session. “The university has already prepared the syllabus for providing a bachelor degree in environment science,” said Shyamal Sarkar, secretary of Undergraduate Council of Calcutta University.

According to Dhrubjyoti Chattopadhyay, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (academic) of the university, “Various colleges have approached the university for this course. District Inspector of the colleges has already completed an assessment in this regard.”

Last week, in accordance with the instructions of the University Grants Commission, CU had agreed to increase the marks for the paper on Environmental Studies from 50 to 100.

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education had introduced environmental science as a compulsory paper in 2006.
