The Capital witnessed immense traffic jams early on Thursday morning, following roadblocks and protests by the Delhi BJP.

The occasion: The nationwide BJP-VHP bandh in protest against the J&K government’s decision to take over the responsibilities of Amarnath Yatra from the Amarnath Shrine Board.

A huge traffic jam was reported from Vikas Marg, which was lifted after police intervention. Several other areas in east Delhi, including Preet Vihar, Mayur Vihar and Akshardham crossing saw agitations.

According to police sources, two buses were damaged after the protesting mob began throwing stones at Laxmi Nagar. Minor clashes were also reported from the same area.

Other areas that saw unrest were Karkardooma court, Vikas Marg and Mother Dairy in east Delhi.

Jail Road in west Delhi observed a complete ‘bandh’. Sit-in ‘dharnas’ were the order of the day at Madhuban Chowk and pockets of Karol Bagh.

In south Delhi’s Maharani Bagh, Ashram and DND toll bridge junction, protesters blocked traffic, which was eased after locals intervened.

The situation was brought completely under control by 1 pm, police officers said.

An officer said they were prepared for the bandh and had deputed extra force across the Capital — especially in sensitive areas — to thwart any untoward incident.
