Kolkata, August 02 Since the Kolkata police suffer with staff shortage, environmental and civic offences such as illegal cutting of trees and violation of traffic rules often go unchecked. To meet the situation, a civic police force called the Green Police has been constituted in the city.

“Nearly 12,000 posts are lying vacant with the city police. Hence, the police have little time for anything else besides dealing with law and order issues and carrying out criminal investigation,” said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday. He was speaking at the inauguration of a computer training centre launched by the Kolkata police at Beniapukur.

“The Green Police, a joint venture of the Kolkata police and the KMC, will address the issue of civic offences. The force has been formed by recruiting members from nearly 560 clubs of the city,” said Bhattacharjee.
