Kolkata, August 12 A woman, Mana Naskar, killed her two-year-old nephew by throwing him in a pond in Sankrail, Howrah on Tuesday. The locals beat her up and handed her over to the police. Gobindo Naskar’s body was later fished out of the pond.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that she committed the crime out of jealousy because she had no male child,” said Neeraj Kumar Singh, Police Superintendent of Howrah.

Gobindo lived with his mother Sabita, father Madhumoy and two sisters at Manikpur, Paschimpara in Howrah. Mana, who had two daughters, also lived in the same house.

Sabita and Mana often had altercations because Mana did not have a son. Such an altercation took place last night also, said a police officer.

In the morning, when the boy was sleeping alone in the house, Mana allegedly picked him and threw him in the pond. “Mana’s own daughter, Sajani (3), helped us in ascertaining her crime. During interrogation, she told us that her mother had thrown Gobindo in the pond,” said an officer of the Sankrail Police Station.
