Independence Day brings hope to Rizwanur Rehman’s family

Kolkata, August 14 Independence Day couldn’t have been better for the Rehman family. With the judiciary providing a ray of hope, the family now awaits the punishment for the accused. Rizwanur Rehman, a computer graphics designer, was a resident of Tiljala Lane. Married to Priyanka Todi and later pressured by his in-laws and hounded by the police, he was finally separated from his wife. His body was found near the tracks at Patipukur on September 21.

“It’s been a long wait since we lost him. I am happy with today’s verdict. But my wait continues till the guilty are punished. Nothing will bring back my son, but punishment to the guilty will help him rest in peace. I have faith in judiciary,” said Kishwar Jehan, Rehman’s mother.

“The court affirmed our stand and did not accept that my brother had committed suicide. We have always said the police had violated the constitution,” said Rukbanur, Rehman’s brother.

Since morning, there was tension at Tiljala Lane as everybody was waiting for the High Court’s decision and people were glued to TV sets. Several policemen were deployed at the area to prevent any untoward incident.

The moment news of the decision reached, locals shouted in joy. Slogans of “Justice Dipankar Datta jindabad” echoed in the air.
