Kolkata, August 14 Taking lessons from the Rizwanur episode, Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti has directed the police to keep away from personal and family matters of complainants.

“When both parties are adult, police has no role to play. If any interference by police is brought to my notice, I will take strict action,” he said.

On Thursday, Justice Dipankar Dutta of the High Court termed the role played by the police unconstitutional. Chakrabarti said, “In such cases, police should keep away.”

“Several family related cases come to us for counselling. We have a designated department, women and family grievances cell, with women officers. We have asked all such cases to be directed to it,” said Subrata Narayan Sarkar, Joint Commissioner of Police. The officers have been told to resolve family issues amicably and not to take sides. “The police must maintain neutrality,” added Sarkar.
