Dr Khurd's Infertility, ICSI and Test-Tube Baby Centre organised the Infertility Update-2008 to commemorate its silver jubliee year. Dr Sindhutai Paranjape organised the event, which was chaired by well known gynaecologists of Pune including Dr A Vumranikar, Dr Sulochana Gaikwad and Dr Kapila Bharucha. Dr Rupin Shah, well known andrologist from Mumbai, revealed some facts about infertility. According to Shah, "Human reproduction is intricate and although all secrets about fertility are yet to be unraveled, what we do know is, that husbands contribute towards 50 per cent of the causes of infertility in couples." Male Infertility is coming up with the changing trends of lifestyle. The main reasons being — increasing stress of competition, irregular eating and sleeping habits, obesity and vices like smoking, tobacco, gutkha and alcohol. Talking about the semen analysis, Dr Shah said that this analysis gives important information about sperm counts, their mobility and morphology and regular fluctuations in the counts and mobility is physiological and natural. Many of the laboratories still use old criteria of semen parameters which result in abnormally low or false reports. Besides the oration, many interesting talks were held on topics like assisted reproduction, stem cells, polycystic ovaries and test-tube baby. Dr Sadhana Desia released Apla Bal, a new plan to financially help the infertile couples in treatment. A booklet, Miracles in Infertility, a collection of experiences of doctors helping the infertile couples was also released on the occasion.
Talent contest
On the occasion of the World Mental Health Day, Chaitanya Mental Health Care Centre, a trust that works towards treatment and community rehabilitation of people suffering from chronic mental illness, is organising a talent contest on October 10. The show will be held at Tilak Smarak Mandir, Pune. Aiming at mental heath promotion, education and illness prevention, the trust, has been organising this contest among the residents undergoing treatment in various governmental and non-governmental facilities in the state for the past three years.

Arthroscopy meet held
The Indian Arthroscopy Society gathered for their 7th Annual Conference at Goa Medical College to discuss on the issue of 'controversies of arthoscopy' in Goa from September 25 to 27. A panel of experts and delegates debated and discussed the topic and also held lectures and surgical video demonstrations. With a motive to train the younger doctors the Anthroscopic techniques of knee and shoulder, Pune-based doctors, Dr Parag Sancheti, Dr Ashish Babhulkar and Dr Sachin Tapasvi organised conference where Dr Parag Sancheti was elected as Secretary of Indian Anthroscopy Society.
Seminar on injury prevention
With the terrorist activities and bomb blasts increasing, disaster management and prevention of injuries is the need of the hour. Keeping in mind that doctors need to be well equipped to give early treatment during such mishaps, on October 13, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences has organised a seminar on injury prevention control with special focus on management of bomb blast injuries. Led by Dr Mrudula Phadke, the seminar will have surgeons, orthopedicians, anesthetics and specialists working in hospitals and institutes under MUHS, will talk on various issues. Conference postponed
The Ayurved and Unani 2008 conference organised by Maharashtra University of Health sciences, regional centre, Pune, has been extended to January 17 and 18 2009, instead of October 4 and 5 2008. This has been done on account of the held up admissions of all Ayurved and Unani colleges of the state to Ayush, the ayurved council of Government of India. The conference will be held at Bal Gandharv Rangmandir, Pune.
