The couple, Rajesh and Bindu from Alapuzha, decided to enter wedlock and registered their marriage on Monday.
Soon after that the groom took his wife to a jewellery shop and bought her some jewels. However, as they were returning home after that, some differences cropped up and they began to quarrel, police said.
The angry groom then snatched the bag containing the jewels and some cash from the bride and flung it into a nearby canal and walked off in a huff, they said.
The bride seeing her jewels and cash washed away in the waters, swooned and was rushed to the General hospital.
Following this police and fire force rushed to search for the bag, which was retrieved after a few hours.
However, the bag contained only cash and not the jewels-- a gold necklace and chain.
Police suspect that the groom might have disappeared with the ornaments and a search is on for him.
