As per the NCTE guidelines, an individual is eligible to be appointed as a lecturer if he or she holds a masters degree in physical education and there is no particular requirement for him or her to have an MPhil degree or to have cleared the NET exam. The university officials, however, have decided to give preference to the ones who have cleared the NET or have an MPhil degree. It would be only in the absence of such individuals that a lecturer with a MA in Physical Education will be hired.
Talking to Newsline, G K Chatrath, a PU Fellow and a member of the committee said, “The decision has been taken by the committee keeping in mind the quality of education. We have gone a step ahead of the NCTE in defining the educational qualifications for Physical Education lecturers for the benefit of students.”
An official at the varsity said, “Teachers with masters degree in Physical Education were hired only on temporary basis to fill the vacancies. We do not want the students to suffer, so we have kept this relaxation.”
The decision, however, has come as a surprise for individuals seeking jobs in the university. A candidate, with an MA degree in Physical Education, said, “The decision is not fair at all. What is the need to go ahead of the guidelines of the NCTE? The decision, if implemented, is bound to rouse criticism.”
