Old wooden houses, constructed in the traditional spider-joint architecture of Kullu region, are one of the outstanding features of this village and this acted as a catalyst in spreading of the fire in a short span of time.
The rescue work could not be taken up immediately as the fire brigade failed to reach the village on time, that is over two kilometers off the road. Staff of Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment and 40 soldiers of Army transit camp at near by Balchan, lead by 5 JCO and one officer trekked up to the village with water pumping machines and lifted water from a nearby drinking water source to douse the fire. There was no large water body close to the village, which increased the difficulties of the rescue staff.
Superintendent of Police, Kullu district, Jagat Ram said the fire seems to have been triggered by a short circuit and assessment of the loss in terms of money is yet to be done. The SP reached the spot with administration and relief material like blankets, tents, food and kerosene. As per the initial assessment, about 150 people have been rendered houseless. The administration has decided to give 15 days of free ration to the affected people.
The incident refreshed the memories of the fire tragedy in Malana village last winter where many houses were gutted in fire. Local MLA
Gobind Thakur, who was on his way to the village, assured the people of relief. Zila Parishad member of BJP Dhaneshwari Thakur and another member HC Sharma reached the spot. The SDM, ADM and Tehsildar also reached spot to assist in relief operations.
