The monument, a 200-year-old mosque, was in a shambles and not in use for years. The villagers had built a new mosque in the outskirts where people go to offer prayers, said an elderly resident.
The complainant, one Shehzad Khan, accused two, namely Rajkumar and Vijay, in his FIR.
“Khan said he suspected the duo was behind the demolition since their houses are in the vicinity. The two would have benefitted the most if they got the land,” said Jitender Khurana, the investigating officer at the police station.
Khurana said there was no tension in the village and the duo arrested during the day was already out on bail.
“I have heard Khan has asked the accused to rebuild the structure after which he assured he will withdraw the case against them,” added Khurana.
The police have registered a case under Sections 295, 427 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
