Chandigarh Owing to a travel agent’s slackness, a Mohali-based family missed their flight to Kathmandu leaving their hopes of a holiday shattered. The District Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum directed Monsoon Travels in Sector 34 to refund Rs 52,000 as ticket costs.

The complainant, Amarjeet Singh Virk, said he had booked a package tour to Kathmandu, including air tickets and five-star hotel accommodation, from December 1 to 5, 2007. He was assured by the firm that all documents, including the air tickets, would be delivered to him on November 29. Later, he was informed the tickets would be handed over to him at the Delhi airport. When Virk reached the airport, he discovered that the tickets were not confirmed and that he had missed the flight.

The complainant then approached the travel agent for a refund. He deposited the original hotel vouchers as evidence but still, the amount was not refunded. Virk then moved the consumer forum.

In its reply, Diamond Travels, who delivered the tickets to Virk at the Delhi airport, stated that it was not liable for the lapse as it had followed the instructions given by Monsoon Travels.

Monsoon Travels stated that the cost of the tickets (Rs 36,000), which was to be given by Virk after his return from Kathmandu, has not been paid. It denied that the tickets were not confirmed.

Announcing the verdict, the forum said: “Why was the manager of Monsoon Travels so generous to pay the amount from his own pocket while getting the tickets issued from a third party? It shows that they have tried to introduce a false story to justify the delay in sending the tickets to the complainant.”
