Mumbai’s nights of terror
On November 26, terrorists stormed Mumbai and a horrified nation watched as heavily armed men with automatic weapons, grenades and low-intensity bombs struck at least nine locations killing close to 200 and wounding 325. Landmark symbols and public hubs were targeted. The dead included top police officers such Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner (East) Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar. After four days, the security forces ended it by killing four terrorists in Taj where 22 bodies were found. NSG Chief J K Dutt, who announced the end of ‘Operation Black Tornado’ said in all they eliminated eight terrorists – four in Taj, two in Trident-Oberoi and two in Nariman House.
